I live in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by evergreen forests, inland seas, and mountains. I earn my livelihood in data visualization––charts, interactives, and visual storytelling. On a parallel path, I create art.
Drawing and painting have been lifelong avenues for exploring myself, the world around me, and the possibilities that emerge from line, form, and color.
I studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with an initial focus on figure drawing. Concepts such as foreshortening, negative space, and compositional rhythm became valued tools.
But I quickly discovered that I prefer to go beyond the realistic rendering to convey an underlying tone or emotion, or to suggest a symbolic language.
